RESOLUTION

THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

Van Beane

WHEREAS, After graduation from El Camino High in 1966, Van enlisted in the United States Marines and married his high school sweetheart, Becky; and

   

WHEREAS, Mr. Beane began his truck-driving career at the tender age of 20, driving a liquor truck on the San Francisco waterfront, and then hauled airfreight around the Bay Area in semi tractor-trailers for Acme Drayage Company for 10 years before joining Airborne Freight Corporation in 1978; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Beane was a member of the Teamsters Local 85, where he was elected Shop Steward, and became a trustee on the Executive Board in 1987; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Beane was a Business Agent, Dispatcher, Assistant Dispatcher, Recording Secretary, and Vice President, and in 1983 was elected to his first of eight consecutive terms as Secretary Treasurer, a position which he still holds; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Beane is the current Chair of the teamster Convention and Training Trust Fund, overseeing rates and benefits for more than 8,000 working and retired Teamsters and assuring that more than 300 Teamsters have access to high quality skills upgrade training and safety training; and

   

WHEREAS, In 1997, after several years of difficult negotiations, Mr. Beane accomplished the merger of the Local 85 Health and Welfare Fund with the Teamsters Benefit Trust, getting a better plan for a better price for his members and their families, for retirees and employers; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Beane served as Delegate to the San Mateo Central Labor Council and was elected to the Executive Board in 2004, and is currently a member of the Airport Labor Coalition, a member of SFOrganize!, and a Trustee of the San Francisco Labor Council.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors expresses its congratulations to Van Beane for his outstanding contribution to the County of San Mateo and the San Mateo County Central Labor Council that he has proudly served.
