Proclamation of July 24, 2007 as Adelaide Keller Day
RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a Proclamation of July 24, 2007 as Adelaide Keller Day
BACKGROUND:
The County of San Mateo recently lost one of its leading citizens, Adelaide “Addie” Keller. Adelaide, along with her husband George, resided in San Mateo County for nearly sixty years and during that time, few people worked as hard, or contributed as much, to improve the quality of life for the County’s residents. While it would be hard to catalogue all of Addie’s contributions, a number should be mentioned here. Addie worked hard to support many charitable organizations in and around San Mateo County, including the Family Services Agency, the Shelter Network, HIP Housing, San Mateo Library Foundation, the Child Care Coordinating Council, and the San Mateo Medical Center.
In 1970, Addie co-founded the Women’s Recovery Association, to assist women and adolescent girls struggling with substance abuse.
From 1991 through 1996, Addie served on the San Mateo Medical Center Foundation’s Board of Directors. In that role, she was a tireless advocate and fundraiser for the Medical Center, leading memorable initiatives such as the annual “Bed Race and Parade,” which raised much-needed funding for hospital beds and other equipment. Further, over the years, she and her husband George were generous contributors to the San Mateo Medical Center and their $4 million “Challenge Grant” was a key factor in the success of the San Mateo Medical Center’s recent $12 million dollar capital campaign. Addie was also the driving force behind the creation in 2001 of the Keller Center for Family Violence Intervention at the San Mateo Medical Center. This center, which bears Addie’s name, provides crisis intervention; care, treatment and support to the victims of domestic violence; and community outreach and education to break the cycle of domestic violence and prevent child, spousal, and elder abuse and sexual assault.

DISCUSSION:
As is clear from the above discussion, Addie fully embodied the notion of selfless service to her community and the County of San Mateo is the poorer for her passing. She worked tirelessly to improve the County of San Mateo and its institutions and she made a particular impact in opening the doors to quality medical care to the less fortunate among us. It is therefore fitting for the Board to set aside this date, July 24, 2007, in Addie’s memory. It is further fitting for us to recognized and celebrate Addie’s remarkable legacy of generosity and service.
