DESIGNATING JULY 28, 2007 AS

9th ANNUAL COLLARD GREENS

CULTURAL FESTIVAL

WHEREAS, the COLLARD GREENS CULTURAL FESTIVAL was created as a celebration of a rich and diverse cultural heritage to become another tradition of the twenty-first century; and

   

WHEREAS, the COLLARD GREEN CULTURAL FESTIVAL was initiated by the Shule Mandela Academy in 1998 in an effort to raise money for the Academy’s educational programs in East Palo Alto; and

   

WHEREAS, the Shule Mandela Academy offers a unique educational experience centered around an Afro-centric curriculum for students from kindergarten through eighth grade; and

   

WHEREAS, the Shule Mandela Academy continues to provide educational opportunities by way of scholarships and cultural academic programs; and

   

WHEREAS, Collard Greens, which originated in Africa and was brought to the United States via the African Slave Trade, has continued to be a staple in the African American diet; and

   

WHEREAS, the tradition of cooking Collard Greens continues to be passed down through generations and remain a traditional dish; and

 

WHEREAS, this is the ninth year of the COLLARD GREENS CULTURAL FESTIVAL, which is the only known festival to be held west of the Mississippi to celebrate African American culture.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby congratulates the Shule Mandela Academy and the collard Greens Cultural Committee for bringing people together to celebrate this tradition and for their dedication to sustaining the rich heritage and culture in the twenty-first century.
