WHEREAS, on August 14, 1929, the California State Legislature passed legislation that led to the creation of the California Highway Patrol (CHP); and
WHEREAS, from an initial force of 280 officers, the CHP now includes more than 7,000 officers and 3,000 non-sworn employees who are integral to protecting the safety of all Californians; and
WHEREAS, the duties of the Highway Patrol have grown from traffic law enforcement to participation in vehicle theft and anti-drug task forces, managing the statewide Amber Alert network, and responding to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods and major fires; and
WHEREAS, after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the Highway Patrol assumed responsibility for the security of major bridges, the power grid, the water delivery system, the State Capitol and other state buildings.
