WHEREAS, in 2004, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the American Red Cross sponsored a nationwide effort along with a wide variety of organizations, including local, state and federal government to promote individual involvement to ready themselves for emergencies and large-scale disasters in local communities; and

WHEREAS, the desolation of Gulf states from Hurricane Katrina illustrates the potential devastation to a community and highlights the importance of preplanning disaster response and sheltering operations; and

WHEREAS, the goal of National Preparedness Month is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and to encourage individuals and families to take some simple steps to prepare for an emergency situation; and

WHEREAS, the County of San Mateo joins more than 200 national, regional and local organizations in encouraging all homes, businesses and schools on the Peninsula to evaluate and update their plans for the aftermath of a large-scale emergency. And because disaster can strike the Bay Area at any time with little or no warning, the Board further highlights the vital importance of constant vigilance and preparedness during National Preparedness Month as well as throughout the year.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates September 2007 as National Preparedness Month in the County of San Mateo.
