THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING OCTOBER 14-20, 2007, AS

Senior Safe Mobility Week

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, residents age 60 and older currently make up approximately 19 percent of San Mateo County’s population; and

   

WHEREAS, by 2030, the number of residents age 60 and older is projected to grow to some 29 percent of the overall population; and

   

WHEREAS, the ability to safely drive a personal vehicle is a critical component of an older person’s transportation independence and ability to live with economic and social self-determination; and

   

WHEREAS, organizations public and private organize and conduct educational sessions for seniors to improve their driving skills and to help them remain driving safely for as long as possible; and.

   

WHEREAS, since August 2005, more than 1,000 San Mateo County seniors have benefited from the Older Driver Traffic Safety Seminar presented by the Senior Volunteers of the California Highway Patrol; and

   

WHEREAS, the community as a whole must work together to help ensure safety for all on the streets and highways of San Mateo County, as well as to determine when a driver should seek alternatives to driving.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates October 14-20, 2007, as Senior Safe Mobility Week, and encourages all to drive with care and to help others, especially seniors, to do the same.
