Upon her retirement

WHEREAS, Linda Gregory was born in Seattle, Washington. As a young child, her family moved to Sacramento, California where she was raised in a working class family. At the tender age of 18, Linda and Richard married and started a family; and

WHEREAS, in 1968 Linda began her career in the public sector where she worked as a Junior Clerk for Santa Clara County. As Junior Clerk, she was represented by SEIU Local 715, and became active member; and

WHEREAS, Linda came up through the rank and file at S.EI.U. Local 715. She started as a Shop Steward, which lead her to become involved with political action. Because of her activism, she rose as a leader and became an officer of the Local, and later she was hired on as a Research Director; and

WHEREAS, in 1975, she started working as a Business Agent for American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 57 (AFSCME) representing public employees in the County, City and hospitals. Throughout her AFSCME career, Linda has not only represented employees; she has negotiated hundreds of contracts and conducted strategic planning meetings for AFSCME locals throughout Northern California. She has also been the Associate Director of Council 57 for decades; and

WHEREAS, one of her greatest achievements while working for AFSCME was the comparable pay campaign: a reform effort to pay different job titles the same, based on their value to their employer, regardless of the gender predominance of those working in such titles. The net result is that jobs disproportionately held by women are paid less at comparable jobs with the same levels of skills and responsibilities but commonly held by males. California public employees were the first in the nation to earn comparable pay for comparable work; and

WHEREAS, in 1981, she began teaching at San Jose and San Francisco City Colleges in the Labor Studies Program, where she taught basic and advanced Steward Training for a variety of different bargaining units and unions. Through the Labor Studies program, she had the opportunity to train thousands of union members.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors honors and commends Linda Gregory’s devotion of her life to the plight of the American worker. We wish Linda much success in all her future endeavors.
