WHEREAS, Daly City dedicated its first War Memorial Community Center in October 1952, at the height of the Korean War and just seven years after the end of World War II, to acknowledge and recognize the sacrifices of those who served; and

WHEREAS, for the next 52 years, countless tens of thousands of people from at least two generations used the facility for exercise, charity, recreation, celebration, education and civic participation; and

WHEREAS, as part of Daly City’s long-term, $40 million capital improvement plan, approved in the late-1990s, city leaders placed a high priority on replacing the aged building, which had served the community for more than five decades; and

WHEREAS, the new War Memorial Community Center is a $13.5 million, state-of-the-art neighborhood centerpiece containing two gymnasiums, a catering kitchen and various multi-purpose rooms covering some 34,000 square feet on three levels; and

WHEREAS, additionally, the third level houses the new, ultra-modern John Daly Library, replacing a previous site that opened in 1920; and the new facility continues to recognize all in uniform, including a special tribute to the largely forgotten contributions of Filipino veterans.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates the City of Daly City upon the rededication and grand opening of the War Memorial Community Center and John Daly Library. The Board hereby extends to the people of Daly City sincere wishes that this new center serves its community for at least another five decades.
