TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Adrienne J. Tissier

SUBJECT:

Appointment to the Parks and Recreation Commission

RECOMMENDATION:

It is recommended that Michael J. Cooney of South San Francisco be appointed as a member of the Parks and Recreation Commission. This appointment to the 5th District’s seat would be through January 3, 2009.

BACKGROUND:

The 5th District’s seat on the Parks and Recreation Commission has been open since August 2, 2007, when then-Commissioner Teresa Ferrer Guingona resigned her appointment because of a change in her residency. Since then several individuals have expressed interest in the Commission, with Mr. Cooney being the fifth candidate screened.

This appointment would be for the balance of Ms. Guingona’s term.

A former city employee of Daly City, Mr. Cooney has an extensive background in water and wastewater sanitation. In addition, he has served on the Daly City Personnel Commission, the Daly City Deferred Compensation Committee, Peninsula Library Commission and as a board member and president of the Daly City Employees Credit Union. Mr. Cooney’s dedication to public service is apparent.

Mr. Cooney has already met with Parks Director Dave Holland, who anticipates Mr. Cooney’s past experiences to be of great benefit as the department and commission review facilities and consider modernization priorities.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None.
