BACKGROUND

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for December 2007 is Dr. Alan Louie, Supervising Adult Psychiatrist, in the Health Department.

DISCUSSION

Dr. Louie joined the County family in 2000 after graduating from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, pursuing an internship at Stanford University Hospital and conducting his psychiatric residency at the University of Chicago and a fellowship at UCSF. In addition to his current position as Director of the San Mateo County Mental Health Services Psychiatric Residency Program, he is also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCSF.

Under his excellent leadership and direction, the Mental Health Services Psychiatric Residency Program has gained national recognition as a top program in Community Psychiatry. Yearly, the program draws over 200 resident applicants from across the United States and even internationally. Dr. Louie and his faculty interview forty-five of these applicants, and four are chosen to attend the four-year residency program. Both in 2005 and 2006, the program scored the highest score in a national examination which psychiatric residents take to assess their knowledge of psychotherapy. Due to Dr. Louie’s leadership, many of our residents opt to continue to work for the County after completing their residency, thus enabling the County to more effectively recruit and retain community psychiatrists at a time when many other public mental health systems are not able to do so.

Dr. Louie has also enhanced ties between the San Mateo County Mental Health Services Psychiatry Residency Program and academic centers with medical schools, namely Stanford and UCSF. These connections help to create a “learning community” and enrich the experience of both our psychiatric residents and the psychiatric staff, exposing our clinical providers to the most recent academic and clinical developments in the field of psychiatry. These ties include our residents completing electives at these centers, as well as taking part in research projects.

Dr. Louie is committed to the individual professional development of each of our residents. He meets frequently with them and oversees their caseloads and rotations. He fosters their areas of interest by crafting special electives and providing stimulating readings. He celebrates their accomplishments and milestones. This year, the graduating class of residents elected to honor him with the Outstanding Faculty Award for his “support, inspiration and teaching”.

Dr. Louie is a great asset to San Mateo County. His commitment to developing competent, ethnically diverse psychiatrists makes us confident that our most mentally ill populations will be served by the best in the field. His humanism and kindness touches everything he does and will impact the County for years to come.

Our County is fortunate to have Dr. Alan Louie as one of its outstanding employees.
