RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE PACIFICA CITY COUNCIL’S PETITION TO THE CITY AND COUNTY OF SAN FRANCISCO TO RETAIN SHARP PARK GOLF COURSE AS A PUBLIC GOLF COURSE

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

 

WHEREAS, the City and County of San Francisco has been discussing the future of their golf courses including the Sharp Park Golf Course located in Pacifica; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Pacifica has been working with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department staff and elected officials to support the retention and revitalization of the Sharp Park Golf Course in Pacifica; and

 

WHEREAS, the Sharp Park Golf Course has been used for many years by youth and seniors from San Francisco and San Mateo Counties and has served as a prime recreational and social outlet for many citizens including retirees, youth, families and visitors, and has served as a venue for countless fundraising activities supporting non-profits and community organizations; and

WHEREAS, the Sharp Park Golf Course and Club House are historically significant facilities; the golf course built in 1932 was designed by Alister MacKenzie, a world famous golf course architect who later designed the Masters Course in Augusta, and the club house built in 1932 was designed by architect Willis Polk; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Pacifica under direction of the City Council has formed a Golf Course Task Force to define an approach which will allow the City of Pacifica and San Francisco to work in conjunction with all parties of interest on the subject of the Sharp Park Golf Course and the extensive undeveloped remainder Sharp Park property to maximize the recreational opportunities offered by this historic property within the City of Pacifica for the benefit of residents of San Francisco, San Mateo County and all visitors to the San Mateo County Coast; and

 

WHEREAS, the Golf Course Task Force will be establishing relationships with Audubon International and other conservation focused organizations that are aware of the environmentally sensitive habitat within the Sharp Park Trust Lands and are in support of working towards an environmentally sensitive solution.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors support the City of Pacifica and the efforts of the Pacifica Golf Course Task Force to work in a proactive manner with all parties of interest to help preserve the Sharp Park Golf Course as a public golf course and to help explore and define alternate uses for the Sharp Park Trust Lands located within the boundary of the City of Pacifica.
