RESOLUTION 1) ACCEPTING A GRANT FROM SEQUOIA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE AMOUNT OF $90,000 TO PROVIDE HEALTH SERVICES TO THE SEQUOIA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 2) AUTHORIZING THE APPROVAL OF A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH THE SEQUOIA UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT TO IMPLEMENT THE PROVISIONS OF THE GRANT, FOR THE PERIOD JULY 1, 2007 TO JUNE 30, 2008

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD) has received $90,000 from Sequoia Healthcare District (SHCD) to hire an additional school nurse for the period July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a MOU will allow SUHSD to pay SMMC $90,000 to hire a public health nurse since the school district does not have the capability to do this; and

WHEREAS, the public health nurse will provide health assessments and consultation for staff, students and families and coordinate screening and health assessments for students referred for special education services at the schools; and

WHEREAS, adding a public health nurse will accomplish the following objectives: 1) increase training hours for health aides, including medication administration, emergency treatment for asthma, diabetes and epilepsy, and specific adolescent risk-taking behaviors; 2) increase school nurse involvement in Student Study Team and Individualized Education Plans; 3) increase mandatory hearing screening of students; and 4) increase identification of students with asthma, in coordination with SMMC Sequoia Teen Wellness Center staff; and

WHEREAS, the grant from SUHSD is in the amount of $90,000. The term of the MOU with SUHSD is July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008; and

WHEREAS, there has been presented to this Board of Supervisors for its consideration and acceptance a grant award, reference to which is hereby made for further particulars, whereby SUHSD will allocate funds in the amount of $90,000 to provide health services to the SUHSD; and

WHEREAS, this Board has been presented with the award and the MOU and desires to accept the award and approve the MOU.

NOW THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the President of this Board of Supervisors be, and is hereby authorized and directed to accept said award and approve said MOU on behalf of the County of San Mateo, and the Clerk of this Board shall attest the President's signatures thereto.
