THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

JUDY EDELSON

Upon her retirement from the Peninsula Jewish Community Center

WHEREAS, JUDY EDELSON has worked for nearly a quarter-century as the Executive Director of the Peninsula Jewish Community Center (PJCC), and has had a rich career devoted to Jewish communal life in the San Francisco Bay Area and greater Los Angeles area; and

WHEREAS, JUDY EDELSON became Executive Director of the PJCC in Belmont in 1984, at a time when there was concern over whether the North Peninsula’s demographics justified a strong community center presence, and in five years JUDY EDELSON’s charismatic personality, leadership skill and dedication turned the PJCC into a flourishing center; and

WHEREAS, in May of 2004, JUDY EDELSON presided over the grand opening of the new Peninsula Jewish Community Center in Foster City, a unique partnership with the City of Foster City and several Jewish communal organizations, which features the state-of-the-art Byer Athletic Center, the prestigious and enriching Koret Learning Center, and many other new and expanded programs and facilities; and

WHEREAS, under JUDY EDELSON’s leadership the new PJCC is thriving with a budget of approximately $14 million and a $2 million program endowment, making it a destination for the entire Jewish community, affiliated and unaffiliated, who can celebrate and share meaningful moments and life events with one another, their families, friends and neighbors; and

WHEREAS, when the PJCC opened its very first door, nearly sixty years ago in a tiny house in Burlingame, its vision was to be a place of compassion, a symbol of unity and a home for the region’s Jewish community; and, JUDY EDELSON’s remarkable leadership and legacy has ensured an ongoing, vibrant future for the PJCC and the Peninsula’s Jewish community,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby commends JUDY EDELSON for her leadership, dedication and commitment to the Jewish community, as well as all residents of San Mateo County, and wishes her all the best in the next phase of her life.
