PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING FEBRUARY 25-MARCH 3, 2008, AS | ||||
Peace Corps Week | ||||

WHEREAS, The Peace Corps is an enduring symbol of the United States’ commitment to encouraging progress and creating opportunities at the grassroots level in the developing world; and | ||||
WHEREAS, since 1961, more than 190,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps Volunteers in 139 countries, including some 25,800 men and women from California; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Peace Corps Volunteers have made significant and lasting contributions worldwide in agriculture, business development, information technology, education, environmental protection, health and nutrition and HIV/AIDS prevention; helping to improve the lives of countless millions on a global scale; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Peace Corps Volunteers have enhanced and strengthened the bonds of friendship and understanding between the people of the United States and those of other cultures; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Peace Corps Volunteers, enriched by their experiences overseas, have brought to their home communities throughout the United States a wider perspective of the world and all its diverse societies and customs, thereby bringing a domestic dividend to the country, California and San Mateo County as a whole. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County hereby designates February 25-March 3, 2008, as Peace Corp Week. The Board expresses its appreciation for the tremendous contributions and sacrifices made by Peace Corps Volunteers, and adds sincere wishes to the Peace Corp for many more decades of continued excellence. | ||||
