RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE FAMILY OF

Barbara Hammerman

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Barbara Hammerman a Chicago native and 20-year veteran of the San Mateo Police Department, died Dec. 31, 2006, at her Belmont home, surrounded by the peace and love of friends and family; and

   

WHEREAS, Barbara’s legacy is one of courage and service, starting with her own barrier-shattering career as the first openly gay police officer with the San Mateo Police Department, the first female sergeant, the first female lieutenant and the department’s first female motorcycle officer; and

   

WHEREAS, Barbara also served as an undercover narcotics officer, hostage negotiator, mentor to younger officers, commander of the detective bureau, and she authored the countywide domestic violence response protocols; and

   

WHEREAS, through it all, Barbara never forgot her primary duty to serve and protect the people of San Mateo County, as she dedicated significant personal resources toward the California Attorney General’s Commission on Domestic Violence, the Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse organization and the County Mediation Program; and

   

WHEREAS, even through her deteriorating health, Barbara continued to reach out by appearing on national television to share personal information and to give hope to others facing similar medical diagnoses.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates the family of Barbara Hammerman upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame, and hereby extends gratitude and recognition that Barbara’s spirit continues in the myriad people she helped and inspired throughout San Mateo County.
