PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING APRIL 2008 AS

Climate Change

Awareness Month

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, April 2008 contains several environmental observances, including the April 7-13 Public Health Week “Climate Change: Our Health in the Balance; and the April 13-19 National Environmental Education Week; and

   

WHEREAS, April 20-26 is Earth Week and April 22, 2008, is set as the 39th annual Earth Day, with the theme “A Call for Climate Action;” and

   

WHEREAS, medical experts with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report health concerns linked to climate change include heat-related cardiovascular events, worsening of asthma and chronic pulmonary disease, outbreaks of air- and waterborne infectious diseases, injuries from extreme weather events and mental health issues resulting from catastrophic events; and

   

WHEREAS, health care providers must be prepared to recognize and treat such conditions, and local elected officials, businesses, schools and community-based organizations must continue to help the public reduce energy consumption; and

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates April 2008 as Climate Change Awareness Month. The Board further encourages everyone to learn more about the consequences of climate change and to actively participate at home, work and school in activities designed to reduce, re-use and to recycle.
