BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION CONVENING A “GREEN WORKS” SUMMIT TO EXPLORE THE DEVELOPMENT OF A JOB TRAINING AND JOB PLACEMENT PROGRAM IN BUSINESSES WHOSE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES DIRECTLY IMPROVE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

 

WHEREAS, this Board desires to support the growth of green businesses in San Mateo County, providing incentives to businesses that provide high-quality, non-polluting, carbon reducing jobs; and

 

WHEREAS, this Board desires to ensure a trained workforce that can make San Mateo County less polluting, more energy efficient, and reduce carbon emissions creating environmentally sustainable communities; and

 

WHEREAS, this Board desires to assist adults out of poverty and into living wage careers; and

 

WHEREAS, this Board desires to advance San Mateo County’s economic leadership and promote San Mateo’s position as a leading county in green economic development; and

 

WHEREAS, this Board determines that a program should be set up to provide job training and placement services in green-collar careers to adults who have had difficulty finding opportunities for employment. This program will be designed to train new workers with the skills they need to succeed in the new economy; and

 

WHEREAS, this Board determines that to ensure the success of such a program, it should be developed through a collaborative process with the business community, unions, workforce development, technical and community colleges, and County departments and that a summit should be held with individuals from all these stakeholders to commence this process. The County Manager has indicated that he will designate Beverly Beasley Johnson, Director of the Human Services Agency, to coordinate this summit and to report on the progress of the development of the program to the Housing, Health, and Human Services Committee.

 

NOW THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND DIRECTED that a Green Works summit be convened sometime within the next six months to commence a collaborative process involving the business community, unions, workforce development, technical and community colleges, and County departments to develop a “Green Works” program as a means to provide careers in businesses whose products and services directly improve environmental quality.

 

IT IS FURTHER DETERMINED AND DIRECTED that the County Manager or his designee coordinate this summit and report on the progress of the development of a Green Works program to the Housing, Health, and Human Services Committee.
