RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING | ||||
Stephen J. Waterman | ||||
Upon His Retirement After | ||||
40 Years in Public Education | ||||

WHEREAS, Stephen J. Waterman, a native of Rochester, New York, has dedicated his entire professional career to the education of children, starting in 1968 with the public schools in Syracuse, New York; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Steve taught reading in East St. Louis, Illinois, while earning his master’s degree in education at Southern Illinois University and later, his doctorate at the prestigious Washington University in nearby St. Louis, Missouri; and | ||||
WHEREAS, moving to the US Virgin Islands, Steve taught eighth graders before becoming a planning and evaluation specialist for the territory’s Department of Education; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in 1977, Steve returned stateside first to the Berkeley Unified School District as an evaluator and program supervisor; followed in 1986 by a stint as director of special projects and curriculum and the assistant superintendent for instruction and legal Issues with the Ravenswood City School District in East Palo Alto; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in 1987, Steve passed the California bar exam after earning his law degree from the University of San Francisco School of Law; in 1993, Steve became superintendent of the Brisbane School District, and in 2003, simultaneously became superintendent of the neighboring Bayshore School District; and | ||||
WHEREAS, for four decades, Steve has tirelessly focused on providing children with a high-quality, academically rigorous public education, especially those from lower-income families and neighborhoods. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Stephen J. Waterman upon his retirement after a 40-year career in public education, of which 22 years were in San Mateo County. The Board expresses its gratitude and adds sincere wishes to Steve, his wife Paulette, sons Kailin and Christian and grandson Granite, for many, many years of continuous peace, health and happiness. | ||||
