RESOLUTION

THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

 

LUTHER JACKSON

 

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was born on tenth day of June, 1925 in Monroe, Georgia as the sixth child to James Jackson and Gladys Hawk Jackson; and

   

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson graduated from Woodworth High School in Cincinnati, Ohio and earned a degree in Christian Education from the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee; and

   

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he met Frettie Sanders, the love of his life, and they were married and blessed with three children – Jacqueline, Gwendolyn, and Dwight and they were blessed to raise Luther’s nephew Melvin Grimes as their own son; and

   

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson and his family became our friends and neighbors by taking up residence in East Palo Alto in 1954; and

 

WHEREAS, Luther and Frettie were always a positive and industrious force in our community, including starting their own business in Palo Alto, the Jackson Auto Laundry which they successfully operated for 35 years, helping found the St. John Baptist Church in East Palo Alto, and serving as Chairman of the Deacon Board, layman, and Bible teacher; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was a charter member of the local chapter of the NAACP in the late 1950’s, a member of the San Mateo County Grand Jury, and Chairperson of the Personnel Commission for the City of East Palo Alto where he encouraged many people to pursue the privilege of public service; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby extends their gratitude to Luther Jackson and his family for the many contributions he made to our community and its citizens during his rich and full life and point to Mr. Jackson as an example to be commended now and forever.
