RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING | ||||
CORA Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse | ||||
Upon the Celebration of Its | ||||
30th Anniversary | ||||

WHEREAS, in 1978, La Casa de San Mateo started as the county’s sole emergency shelter for victims and survivors of domestic violence and their children; La Casa de San Mateo later evolved into the Center for Domestic Violence Prevention; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in 1993, Sor Juana Inés is born to provide the first toll-free, domestic violence support hotline addressing the unique needs of the Latino community in San Mateo County; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in 2003, the two entities merged to create CORA, serving victims and survivors regardless of age, gender, cultural background, financial status, language, sexual orientation, immigration status, religion, mental or physical ability; and | ||||
WHEREAS, CORA’s components include 24-hour telephone response, emergency response and shelter, transitional housing, legal assistance, individual and family therapy, plus programs for children and youth; CORA’s dedicated staff and volunteers speak nine languages, take 5,000 calls a year and provide case management for 700 clients; and | ||||
WHEREAS, over the past three decades, CORA, as the only provider of free, confidential and comprehensive domestic violence services in San Mateo County, has served more than 6,000 clients annually. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse upon the celebration of its 30th Anniversary. The strength and spirit of La Casa de San Mateo and Sor Juana Inés remain alive in CORA and countless victims and survivors of domestic violence have benefited. The Board expresses its gratitude to CORA and extends sincere wishes for at least another three decades of continuous success and excellence. | ||||
