BACKGROUND

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for June 2008 is Heisel Lech, a Dental Assistant with San Mateo Medical Center.

DISCUSSION

Heisel Lech, is a Dental Assistant at the Willow Clinic, and is a truly outstanding employee. Heisel goes well above and beyond her duties, and treats patients with a kindness and compassion that exemplifies the values of our County and the San Mateo Medical Center.

Heisel is the “backbone” of the Willow Denture Clinic, which is part of the Adult Dental Program. This program, which won a County STARS award in 2007, provides comprehensive dental care to low-income, underinsured patients, at no net county cost. Patients who previously went untreated and often toothless, receive dental care and dentures in an innovative collaboration with University of the Pacific, School of Dentistry. The Willow Dental Clinic plays a critical role in the preparation phase of the care, and Heisel is the lynchpin that makes it all work.

Heisel has received numerous letters praising her treatment of patients, both from the patients and the faculty from University of the Pacific Dental School. One patient wrote, “My last appointment today brought a few tears to my eyes, just because of how I was treated in your clinic by Heisel…”

In addition, Heisel is constantly finding small and large ways to treat more patients more efficiently and effectively by suggesting changes in schedules, procedures, and protocols.

Heisel’s commitment to the Adult Dental Program has been a critical success factor. She is a team player and has worked hard for the success of the dental clinic. Dr. La Barre, a prosthetic specialist from UOP, calls Heisel “a model of efficiency” and has commented on being impressed with her “high energy”.

Heisel exemplifies the best of our County, she is innovative, committed, humble, and passionate about her work and her patients.

Our County is fortunate to have Heisel Lech as one of its outstanding employees.
