WHEREAS, in 1983, BRIDGE Housing was created when an anonymous donor presented the San Francisco Foundation with a gift of $600,000 to help solve the worsening shortage of affordable housing; and

WHEREAS, at the time, the business community, led by the Bay Area Council, recognized that rising housing costs were increasingly burdensome and detrimental to the region’s workforce and economy; and

WHEREAS, the not-for-profit BRIDGE organization represented a departure from standard procedures and set out to actually build thousands of high-quality housing units within the financial capabilities of the Bay Area’s low- to moderate-income individuals and families; and

WHEREAS, over the past 25 years, BRIDGE has built more than 13,000 residential units for more than 35,000 people in 100 communities throughout California; plus BRIDGE has created more than 400,000 square feet of commercial space to help create local services and permanent jobs; and

WHEREAS, BRIDGE’s innovation has earned more than 50 state, national and international awards, while its leadership team continues the organization’s unwavering focus on meeting the Bay Area’s affordable-housing needs.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates BRIDGE Housing upon the celebration of its 25th Anniversary. The Board expresses its gratitude to BRIDGE and extends sincere wishes for at least another quarter century of success and excellence.
