RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING | ||||
BURLINGAME CENTENNIAL GALA | ||||

WHEREAS, in 1866 Anson Burlingame, the U.S. Minister to China, stopped in the Bay Area on his way to China to visit banker William C. Ralston and became the owner of 1043 acres of land, and his name, “Burlingame,” was put onto the parcel map for reference; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in 1885 the land owned by Anson Burlingame was passed on to Francis Newland, who envisioned building estates that surrounded a country club; and | ||||
WHEREAS, In 1893 the Burlingame Country Club was organized and the founding members chose the name “Burlingame,” and the area surrounding the club came to be known by that name as well; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in 1894 the Burlingame Train Station, which was designed to be reminiscent of the California Missions, was built to service the Country Club and was paid for mostly with private funds supplied by its members; and | ||||
WHEREAS, when the great earthquake and fire of 1906 devastated San Francisco, many people looking to escape the city ruins flocked south to Burlingame, where hundreds of lots were sold; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in 1908 the town of Burlingame was incorporated, and by 1910, the neighboring town of Easton was annexed and became part of Burlingame. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, on June 6, 2008 hereby honors, commends and congratulates the City of Burlingame, California on the Celebration of its 100th Anniversary. | ||||
