RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING

Mike Borstel

Upon Receiving

The 2008 C.O.P.E. Unity Award

WHEREAS, Mike Borstel’s career with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union started as a Local 648 bagger at GEMCO in Colma, followed in 1989 by his membership in UFCW Local 775, which merged into Local 101 in 1992; and

WHEREAS, Mike quickly rose through the ranks of UFCW Local 101, serving as shop steward and, by 1995, picket captain, and in 2001, was elected president; and

WHEREAS, in 2004 and 2007, Mike was re-elected president, maintaining the distinction of being the first and only president of UFCW Local 101 to be re-elected; and

WHEREAS, under Mike’s unwavering leadership, UFCW Local 101 has negotiated some of the best retail contracts in the country, while personally ensuring union benefits to members’ families; and

WHEREAS, UFCW Local 101 enjoys unprecedented long-term stability because of Mike’s focus on forging relationships with Peninsula communities, elected leaders and local groups, including the San Mateo County Central Labor Council and the Building & Construction Trades Council of San Mateo County.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Mike Borstel for receiving the 2008 C.O.P.E. Unity Award presented by the San Mateo County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO. The Board further recognizes Mike for his leadership and commitment to his union brothers and sisters and their families throughout San Mateo County.
