BACKGROUND:

SMMC uses an outside provider for acute dialysis services for in-patients. This is not a service that is provided by SMMC’s in-house medical staff. Total Renal Care, Inc. (formerly DVA , DaVita, and Gambro) has been providing the acute dialysis services for patients of SMMC since 2003.

DISCUSSION:

A Request for Proposal (RFP) for dialysis services was sent to 12 agencies in May 2008. Of the 10 responses received, only Total Renal Care could meet SMMC’s service needs.

Total Renal Care uses an Acute Service Coordinator to provide staff scheduling of its own staff upon direct request from the patient’s physician. The staff works in collaboration with the assigned primary nurse at SMMC to provide and be responsible for set up and operation of the dialysis equipment, patient care during the dialysis procedure, and reporting to SMMC nurse and nephrologists.

Health System Redesign Initiative Team, County Counsel and Risk Management have reviewed and approved this Agreement.

The contractor has assured compliance with the County’s Contractor Employee Jury Service Ordinance, as well as all other contract provisions that are required by County ordinance and administrative memoranda, including but not limited to insurance, hold harmless, non-discrimination, and equal benefits.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The term of the Agreement is September 1, 2008 through August 31, 2011. The maximum amount expendable under the Agreement is $1,500,000. Funds to pay for these services are included in SMMC’s FY2008-09 Recommended Budget and will be included in future fiscal year budget requests.
