PROCLAMING OCTOBER 2008 AS

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

AWARENESS MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between 15-44 years of age, and approximately 5.8 percent of California women experience domestic violence each year; and

   

WHEREAS, in 2007 domestic violence resulted in 2,564 related 911 calls to law enforcement agencies in San Mateo County; and

   

WHEREAS, between July 2007 and June 2008 in San Mateo County, 140 women and children were provided emergency shelter and transitional housing to escape abusers; and

   

WHEREAS, experts estimate that, in the United States, the direct costs for medical and mental health care related to domestic violence are $4.1 billion annually, and domestic violence is estimated to cause a loss of $858.6 million in lost days of work each year for its victims; and

   

WHEREAS, San Mateo County is committed to eliminating all forms of family abuse and violence.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, proclaims the month of October 2008 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, to raise awareness and to encourage all citizens of San Mateo County to rid our community of domestic violence.
