PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING OCTOBER 16, 2008, AS

International Credit Union Day

In Recognition Of The

100th Anniversary of Credit Unions in the United States

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, credit unions in the United States trace their collective histories back to the St. Mary’s Cooperative Credit Association, formed in November 1908, by Canadian textile workers in and around Manchester, New Hampshire; St. Mary’s original building now houses America’s Credit Union Museum; and

   

WHEREAS, globally, more than 157 million people in 92 countries benefit from the community-based financial services of credit unions, including nine million members in California and more than 273,000 in San Mateo County; and

   

WHEREAS, from remote, rural corners of developing countries to 21st century urban centers, credit unions maintain a leading role in improving financial literacy among people of all backgrounds; and

   

WHEREAS, credit unions are not-for-profit, member-owned institutions offering access and options to help improve individual lives as well as the overall economic health of the community.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates October 16, 2008, as International Credit Union Day in recognition of the 100th anniversary of credit unions in the United States. The Board hereby expresses it gratitude to all credit unions on the Peninsula and extends sincere wishes for continued viability and excellence.
