WHEREAS, on August 23, 1978, Peninsula Ombudsman, Inc., began with funding through the federal Older Americans Act for a small group of trained volunteers to visit senior facilities and long-term care sites to ensure the health, safety and overall well-being of such residents and clients; and

WHEREAS, over the past three decades, the need for such volunteers has grown increasingly vital, as the Peninsula’s population of older adults steadily expanded, plus the number of retirement facilities large and small; and

WHEREAS, since July 2001, Ombudsman Services of San Mateo County, has maintained the county’s ombudsman program, with a staff of six and a volunteers force of 49 watching over seniors as well as adults with disabilities at more than 480 sites countywide; and

WHEREAS, as San Mateo County’s population continues to age and grow toward a ratio of one in every four residents being age 60 or older, the role of the county’s ombudsmen also will grow in scope and importance to continue providing the critical oversight bridge between government and private organizations.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby congratulates Ombudsman Services of San Mateo County upon its 30th anniversary, and encourages all residents of the county and its 20 cities to support ombudsman staff and volunteers in their vital mission. The Board further extends its gratitude to Ombudsman Services and adds sincere wishes for continued excellence.
