RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

 

Maria Altorfer-Abderhalden

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Maria Altorfer-Abderhalden came to the United States from Switzerland on May 10, 1958 and arrived in San Mateo County shortly thereafter; and

   

WHEREAS, while in Switzerland, Ms. Altorfer-Abderhalden was an outdoor enthusiast, often the only woman on cycling and climbing trips; and

   

WHEREAS, as a resident of Belmont Ms. Altorfer-Abderhalden created the Canyon Watch group in response to public safety concerns in the Water Dog Lake area of Belmont; and

   

WHEREAS, Maria Altorfer-Abderhalden served on the Belmont Bicycle Committee and personally took responsibility for weeding Ralston Avenue to make it safer for bicyclists; and

   

WHEREAS, while on the Bicycle Committee, Maria Altorfer-Abderhalden first suggested closing down Caņada Road to cyclists, an idea which has come to fruition today in the form of San Mateo County’s weekly Bicycle Sunday; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County recognizes Maria Altorfer-Abderhalden for her outstanding contribution to bicycling in San Mateo County and wishes her all the best in the future.
