THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE

South San Francisco Police Athletic League

Upon Its

50th Anniversary

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, in 1958, Gus Nicolopulos and Purnell “Pappy” Shaffley created the South San Francisco Police Athletic League as a way to establish positive interactions with the youth of the community; and

   

WHEREAS, by 1962, the SSF PAL had expanded to include multiple boys baseball teams and girls softball teams, participation in a regional Pee Wee League, plus some 50 adults supervising and coaching more than 500 youth; and

   

WHEREAS, over the past five decades, the SSF PAL has served countless thousands of youth and their families through various sports, such as baseball, basketball, bowling, football, gymnastics, soccer, softball and wrestling; and

   

WHEREAS, the SSF PAL also offered a drum-and-bugle corps, small-caliber rifle safety, target shooting competitions and a Police Explorer Program; and

   

WHEREAS, through the tireless and selfless fundraising work of dedicated volunteers, the SSF PAL maintains its mission of creating and ensuring a community environment in which youth can express themselves and focus their energies via creative, positive and constructive channels.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates the South San Francisco Police Athletic League upon its 50th anniversary celebration. The Board expresses it gratitude and extends sincere wishes for at least another five decades of success and excellence.
