THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING
|
BEVERLY BEASLEY JOHNSON, JD
|
2008 Women In County Government Community Service Award Recipient

WHEREAS, since beginning her career with the County of San Mateo as the Human Services Agency (H.S.A.) Director, BEVERLY BEASLEY JOHNSON has been an active community member by mentoring youth from Woodside High School, participating in the anti-violence movement in East Palo Alto and sitting on numerous boards, panels and committees; and

|
|
WHEREAS, on weekends, BEVERLY BEASLEY JOHNSON can often be found participating in community events, such as in marches to promote the end to violence in local communities, volunteering at health fairs or neighborhood events, and speaking to a variety of faith groups to encourage civic participation; and
|
|
|
|
WHEREAS, BEVERLY BEASLEY JOHNSON has encouraged her staff to provide a higher level of public service and enormous compassion for the people served by H.S.A., including setting the example by inviting staff to join her in a Food Stamp diet, in which she and staff volunteered to spend a week living off a typical Food Stamp allotment of $5.06 per day; and

|
|
WHEREAS, from the beginning, BEVERLY BEASLEY JOHNSON has built a sense of openness and trust among her 800+ staff, inviting conversation and engaging in dialogue from many perspectives, including staff from other departments, in order to address issues and create systems of positive change; and, the compassion and integrity of BEVERLY BEASLEY JOHNSON has had a transformative effect on the way that H.S.A. provides services to more than 40,000 individuals and families by utilizing critical management tools, such as strategic planning and accreditation, for creating a stronger system of care for those in need; and
|

|
|
WHEREAS, BEVERLY BEASLEY JOHNSON has built bridges to communities throughout the county that were isolated by geography and socio-economic factors, whether they be rural, suburban or urban in nature, creating an environment of open dialogue in her encounters and interactions with community groups, local churches, citizens’ groups and others,
|
|
|
|
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby commends BEVERLY BESASLEY JOHNSON for her leadership, dedication and commitment and extends congratulations for being named the recipient of the Women In County Government 2008 Community Service Award.
