THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

RITA KAVANAUGH

2008 Women In County Government Self-Development Award Recipient

WHEREAS, coming from a struggling, working class family, RITA KAVANAUGH finished high school early in order to start working so that she could help support her family; and

   
 

WHEREAS, RITA KAVANAUGH trained as a radiology technologist and, after interning at various peninsula hospitals, was most attracted to the mission and the camaraderie of the County hospital, where she has continued to work for the past 30 years; and

   
 

WHEREAS, while employed by the County of San Mateo, RITA KAVANAUGH educated herself, earning both a college degree and five specialty certifications in radiology; and

 

 

WHEREAS, RITA KAVANAUGH worked her way up from line staff, to supervisor, to manager, and finally a deputy director, responsible for radiology, laboratory, pharmacy and rehab services and now oversees 120 staff and a budget of $30 million dollars; and

   
 

WHEREAS, RITA KAVANAUGH was recently selected to participate in an exclusive County-wide leadership fellowship, of which the mission is to help prepare the next generation of County leaders; and

   
 

WHEREAS, RITA KAVANAUGH never forgets her roots, and her leadership style has focused on supporting and mentoring others around her, while always advocating effectively for the needs and views of line staff, which engenders employee loyalty and, yet, she remains highly accountable and results oriented; and

   
 

WHEREAS, RITA KAVANAUGH demonstrated her leadership by raising over $2 million for an advanced CT scanner for SMMC, initiating staffing efficiencies and workflow redesign which reduced expenses, and recruiting a cadre of dedicated and talented managers and supervisors,

   
 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby commends RITA KAVANAUGH for her leadership, dedication and commitment and extends congratulations for being named the recipient of the Women In County Government 2008 Self-Development Award.
