Commitment: Responsive, effective and collaborative government

Goal 21: County employees understand, support and integrate the County vision and goals into their delivery of services.

BACKGROUND

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for January 2009 is Charles Ice, a Hazardous Materials Specialist IV in the Environmental Health Division of the Health System Department.

DISCUSSION

Charles began his career with the County in 2002 as an Environmental Health Specialist in the Groundwater Protection Program (GPP) in Environmental Health.

In 2007, Charles was promoted to Lead Specialist in the GPP and has worked diligently during very challenging circumstances to keep the program running efficiently and effectively. Under Charles leadership, the County programs for remedial oversight of contaminated soil and groundwater cases have become recognized as model programs throughout the State. His peers in other Local Oversight Programs often call upon Charles to weigh in on important administrative and technical issues. Charles frequently acts as the spokesperson for other counties in dealings with the State Water Resources Control Board.

Additionally, Charles has been a valued leader and coach to the staff that was hired after his promotion to lead specialist. He developed and implemented new training programs for the employees to support their competency and development in their new positions and ensure continued success of the programs.

Charles has proven to be an extremely valuable employee, to the county programs he leads, to the staff he supervises and to his colleagues throughout the State that depend on his technical acumen and leadership.

Our County is fortunate to have Charles Ice as one of its outstanding employees.
