RESOLUTION HONORING BILL AND JEAN LANE BY NAMING THE EDUCATION CENTER AT EDGEWOOD COUNTY PARK AND NATURAL PRESERVE THE “BILL AND JEAN LANE EDUCATION CENTER AT EDGEWOOD COUNTY PARK AND NATURAL PRESERVE”

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

 

WHEREAS, the Master Plan for Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve was adopted in 1997 and included reviewing the feasibility of opening an interpretive center to support environmental education and foster volunteer activities; and

 

WHEREAS, the County Parks and Recreation Foundation funded a feasibility study and subsequent concept plan for a center and exhibits in January 2003, and Phase I, the environmental enhancements to the parking area and access at the main entrance were completed in fall 2005; and

 

WHEREAS, the plans and specifications for the Center building and the educational exhibits will be finalized in January 2009; and

 

WHEREAS, the San Mateo County Parks and Recreation Foundation has raised private funds to construct the Center, and the Lanes’ gift significantly closed the funding gap for the Center such that fundraising will be completed in the first quarter of 2009; and

 

WHEREAS, Bill and Jean Lane have been significant supporters and leaders for environmental stewardship and education, as well as advocates and doers in creating an environmentally sustainable future for San Mateo County; and

 

WHEREAS, Bill and Jean Lane have contributed to many different environmental programs, over many years, to improve recreation opportunities and protect endangered environments throughout San Mateo County; and

 

WHEREAS, in addition to the lead gift for the Education Center at Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve, Bill and Jean Lanes’ gifts for County Parks include generous contributions for the renovation of the Folger Estate Stable, the restoration of the Bay checkerspot butterfly habitat at Edgewood, local equestrian efforts to provide all season trails in Huddart Park, the playground at Flood Park, and general support for the Parks Foundation and the “Parks for the Future” efforts.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Education Center at the Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve shall be named the “Bill and Jean Lane Education Center at Edgewood County Park and Natural Preserve” to honor the Lanes’ many contributions to the quality of our open spaces and parklands in San Mateo County and to memorialize their contributions.
