PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING THE FEBRUARY 1, 2009 AS

 
CHINESE NEW YEAR DAY

IN HONOR OF FOSTER CITY’S CELEBRATION OF THE YEAR OF THE OX

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

   
 

WHEREAS, on the Chinese 12 Animal Zodiac, 2009 is the Year of the Ox (Earth), which begins on January 26, 2009 and ends on February 13, 2010, and as the second in the cycle, the Year of the Ox symbolizes prosperity through fortitude and hard work; and

   
 

WHEREAS, the Foster City Arts & Culture Committee, the Foster City Parks and Recreation Department and associated artists and arts and culture groups have joined together to present Foster City’s CHINESE NEW YEAR Celebration 2009, which will spotlight a Chinese American re-creation of a traditional village street fair, named “Temple Fair;” and

   
 

WHEREAS, Foster City’s CHINESE NEW YEAR Celebration 2009 will have luminous decorations and feature exciting musical, acrobatic and lion dance performances, the traditional tea ceremony with the time-honored tradition of tea drinking, martial arts performances, calligraphy, brush painting, art exhibitions, animated storytelling in Chinese and English, Chinese-opera style face painting and the 12 Chinese Zodiac animal characters on hand to greet all visitors; and

 
 

WHEREAS, Foster City’s CHINESE NEW YEAR Celebration 2009 will focus on education by teaching history, traditions and customs through art and craft activities, such as floral pattern designs, Chinese knot-tying, paper-cutting, paper folding and Chinese dance,

   
 

NOW, THEREFORE, the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby proclaims February 1, 2009, CHINESE NEW YEAR DAY in honor of Foster City’s Celebration of the Year of the Ox and encourages all San Mateo County residents to participate in order to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the contributions of Chinese Americans.
