SUBJECT:
Appointment to the Emergency Medical Care Committee
RECOMMENDATION:
Appoint Chief Ron D. Myers to represent the Fire Chief’s Association on the EMCC.
BACKGROUND:
The Emergency Medical Care Committee is a 21-member body overseeing ambulance services in San Mateo County. The membership includes representatives from law enforcement, fire services, emergency communications, health and medical services, coroner services and five members of the public, with no professional interests in emergency medical care.
DISCUSSION:
The committee’s fire chief’s seat has been vacant since March 31, 2008, when Chief Armando Muela, of the Woodside Fire Protection District, reached the body’s three-term service limit. Chief Muela has been a member of the committee since July 1996. The Fire Chief’s Association has selected Chief Ron D. Myers, of the North County Fire Authority, to replace Muela on the committee. Myers is a fire service veteran with more than 24 years of experience.
Chief Myers took over the helm of the Daly City Fire Department in July 2002 after two years as a deputy fire chief for the City of San Mateo. Previous to that, Myers served as cadet, firefighter, apparatus engineer, company officer and – in 1995 – chief of the Oroville Fire Department. Additionally, he simultaneously served as Oroville’s city administrator.
In 2003, Myers played a significant role in the creation of the North County Fire Authority, comprising the communities of Daly City, Pacifica and Brisbane, covering a total area of approximately 60 square miles and home to more than 185,000 residents.
Myers is a California Certified Fire Chief, Certified Chief Officer, Certified Company Officer and a Certified Firefighter. He holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration from California State University, Chico, and an associate’s degree in fire science from Butte College in Oroville.
This would be Chief Myers’ first appointment to a full term expiring March 31, 2012.

FISCAL IMPACT:
