PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING THE MARCH 2009 AS

PROCLAIMED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, according to E. Eisner in The Arts and the Creation of Mind, the arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships and, also teach that problems can have more than one solution and questions can have more than one answer; and

WHEREAS, the arts celebrate multiple perspective – that there are many ways to see and interpret the world - and teaches children that in complex forms of problem solving, purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity; and

WHEREAS, the arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can know and that the limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition; and

WHEREAS, the arts teach students that small differences can have large effects and to think through and within a material; and

WHEREAS, the arts help children learn to say what cannot be said when they are invited to reveal what a work of art helps them feel, so that they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job; and

WHEREAS, the arts enable us to have experiences that we can have from no other source through which we discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling; and

WHEREAS, the arts position in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates the month of March 2009 as ARTS EDUCATION MONTH and encourages all to support arts education in the schools.
