RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING

Gerda Cohn

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, well into her 90s, Gerda Cohn is a role model and inspiration to children and adults alike, as she refuses to allow her impaired eyesight to prevent her from living independently as well as giving back to her community; and

   

WHEREAS, in terms of physical age, Gerda is the most senior member of a San Mateo County commission, having served on the Commission on Disabilities since 1998 and playing a significant role in ensuring the success of the annual People Who Care Awards Dinner, the commission’s signature event; and

   

WHEREAS, Gerda continues to volunteer at Spring valley Elementary School in Millbrae, participates in Community Gatepath’s “Kids on the Block” puppet show and is an active and outspoken member of the San Mateo County chapter of the California Council of the Blind; and

   

WHEREAS, Gerda’s positive attitude and can-do spirit serve as a real-world reminder to everyone around her that a person with disabilities can do anything – they just do it differently.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Gerda Cohn upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame. The Board hereby expresses its gratitude to Gerda and adds sincere wishes for continued success and excellence.

Mary Griffin

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, from a career in education, Mary Griffin served on the Millbrae city council from 1976-1987, including two terms as mayor; and

   

WHEREAS, from 1987-2000, Mary represented District 1 as a San Mateo County Supervisor, and served thrice as president of the Board of Supervisors; and

   

WHEREAS, throughout her professional career, Mary has consistently focused on low-income families and children, seniors and other underserved groups; and

   

WHEREAS, Mary’s tireless dedication is underscored by her role in founding the Children’s Executive Council; creation of the Family Visitation Center; launching the development of the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination Room at the San Mateo Medical Center; plus several childcare and after-school programs; and

   

WHEREAS, Mary’s achievements over the years have earned multiple recognitions, including the Child Care Coordinating Council’s annual award carrying her name, 19th Assembly District’s 2004 Woman of the Year and Millbrae’s 2006 Woman of the Year; in addition, the administration building at the San Carlos Airport is known as the Mary Griffin Administration Building.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Mary Griffin upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame. The Board hereby expresses its gratitude to Mary and adds sincere wishes for continued success and excellence.

Lucy Hupp Williams

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Lucy Hupp Williams is a community volunteer’s community volunteer; through activities and actions great and small, while never allowing her own disabilities to interfere with her willingness to help and advocate for others; and

   

WHEREAS, for 34 years, Lucy hosted and fed San Mateo High School football players at the home she shared with her husband, who was head football coach; those Thursday evening gatherings quickly turned from a tray of brownies to pizza and pasta meals when she learned many of the players missed dinner; and

   

WHEREAS, while Lucy has focused on those with disabilities and all youth, her record underscores a community dedication and consistent readiness to fill a need; and

   

WHEREAS, over the years, Lucy has donated her time and resources to projects ranging from the Boy Scouts to the Police Athletic League to San Mateo High School sports programs to the Foster City and Orinda historical societies; she serves on the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities and is on the board of directors of the Center for Independence of the Disabled in San Mateo County; and

   

WHEREAS, Lucy has taught Sunday school; canvassed for the US Census; made costumes for a local theater group; coached girls softball; taught self-esteem classes for the disabled; served as a volunteer driver and dog sitter for the visually impaired; and she once housed a family from Argentina until the family found a permanent home.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Lucy Hupp Williams upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame. The Board hereby expresses its gratitude to Lucy and adds sincere wishes for continued success and excellence.

Morgan V. Marchbanks

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, since 2000, Morgan V. Marchbanks has served the youth and families of the Sequoia Union High School District and San Mateo County as principal of once-troubled Sequoia High School; and

   

WHEREAS, recognizing the success Morgan achieved at the helm of Redwood High School, district officials called her to rescue a foundering Sequoia High School, which was facing state and federal sanctions and a potential loss of accreditation; and

   

WHEREAS, by 2008, under Morgan’s leadership and vision, Sequoia High School had transformed into a national model for urban schools, boasting a college-attendance rate of 97 percent; and

   

WHEREAS, even as a principal, Morgan maintained ties to the classroom by teaching summer classes; thus, she is able to directly relate to and understand the critical, central driving force of any and all public schools: the needs of the students.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Morgan V. Marchbanks upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame. The Board hereby expresses its gratitude to Morgan and adds sincere wishes for continued success and excellence.

Fran Wagstaff

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, from 1983 until her retirement in mid-2008, Fran Wagstaff served as CEO of the Mid-Peninsula Housing Coalition, and is among the region’s most passionate advocates for affordable housing; and

   

WHEREAS, under Fran’s leadership and through her vision, MPHC grew from 25 to 300 full-time employees and from $50 million to $1 billion in real estate assets, serving tens-of-thousands of low-income families in nine counties from Yuba County to the East Bay to San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties to Monterey County; and

   

WHEREAS, Fran’s dedication to housing is also underscored by her tremendous role in founding and financing the Shelter Network of San Mateo County, which now operates four homeless shelters in the county; and

   

WHEREAS, Fran’s work has earned her wide respect and recognition as a consensus-builder, who can guide diverse interests toward a common goal; additionally, Fran’s achievements over the years are credited with advancing the entire field of high-quality, affordable housing.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Fran Wagstaff upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame. The Board hereby expresses its gratitude to Fran and adds sincere wishes for continued success and excellence.

Mary E. Wallace

Upon Her Induction Into The

San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Mary E. “MaryEm” Wallace has devoted nearly three decades of her professional career toward helping to ensure the physical and mental well-being of San Mateo County’s coastal communities; and

   

WHEREAS, through a 1978 needs assessment she conducted, MaryEm created the Coastside Health Committee, comprising all available health and human services, plus dental health providers, public schools, law enforcement, senior programs and drug and alcohol treatment providers; and

   

WHEREAS, through MaryEm’s vision and advocacy, San Mateo County’s coastal residents, including the Latino population, have access to high-quality health care and human services in one location; and

   

WHEREAS, from sex education for teenagers to classes for teenage parents to support for children, youth and adults with disabilities to establishing resources for mental health programs, MaryEm is a true role model for unwavering compassion; and

   

WHEREAS, over the years, MaryEm’s tireless work has touched myriad thousands of individuals and families, and helped to improve the quality-of-life for at least three generations of San Mateo County’s coastside residents.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Mary E. “MaryEm” Wallace upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame. The Board hereby expresses its gratitude to MaryEm and adds sincere wishes for continued success and excellence.
