Mercedes Ballesteros | ||||
Upon Her Induction Into The | ||||
San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame as a Young Woman of Excellence | ||||

WHEREAS, in 2004, Mercedes Ballesteros, arrived in the United States from her native Mexico, as an unaccompanied 12-year-old, speaking no English; and | ||||
WHEREAS, while she and her middle-school peers struggled to balance homework, after-school activities, plus myriad other aspects of teenage life, Mercedes faced the added challenges of caring for her young son; and | ||||
WHEREAS, after completing the eighth-grade with a President’s Award for Academic Excellence, Mercedes tackled high school with extraordinary determination and discipline, shedding English-language instruction for college-preparatory classes and holding a 3.43 grade point average after her sophomore year; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in addition to raising a healthy son and playing an active role at his daycare center, plus all her academic achievements, Mercedes tutors younger students, and – as an intern – has earned the respect and admiration of the staff of the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County for her work ethic, maturity, compassion and courage. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Mercedes Ballesteros upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame as a Young Woman of Excellence. The Board hereby commends Mercedes and adds sincere wishes for a lifetime of continuous success and excellence. | ||||

Upon Her Induction Into The | ||||
San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame as a Young Woman of Excellence | ||||

WHEREAS, Sonya Chaudry, as a member of the San Mateo County Youth Commission, has demonstrated leadership, initiative and passion, plus a level of maturity well beyond her years; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Sonya quickly and easily earned the respect of fellow youth commissioners as well as adults around her, as she was elected commission vice president, and later, president of the commission’s executive board; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Sonya played significant roles in presenting to the Board of Supervisors all components of the Policy Recommendations of 2007 and the Adolescent Report of 2007, including comprehensive sex education and increased job training; additionally, she helped to create and obtain approval for the 2008 San Mateo County Bill of Rights for Children and Youth; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Sonya has used her experiences through the foster care system to enhance her natural talents and self-confidence, while simultaneously working to make a difference for other foster youth and children throughout San Mateo County. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates Sonya Chaudry upon her induction into the San Mateo County Women’s Hall of Fame as a Young Woman of Excellence. The Board hereby expresses its gratitude to Sonya and her family and adds sincere wishes for a lifetime of continuous success and excellence. | ||||
