PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING MAY 2009 AS | ||||
National Bike Month Bike-to-Work Week May 12-16 | ||||

WHEREAS, since 1995, communities across the United States have highlighted May as National Bike Month, plus Bike-to-Work Week and Bike-to-Work Day; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in 2009, May 12-16 is Bike-to-Work Week and May 14 is Bike-to-Work Day, to encourage an alternate to the private automobile, while promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing carbon emissions; and | ||||
WHEREAS, according to a 2007 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census Bureau, approximately 43,000 Bay Area residents use bicycles as their primary means of daily transportation; and | ||||
WHEREAS, San Mateo County recognizes the impact of vehicle emissions on the overall environment, air quality as well as individual health, plus the detrimental long-term effects of climate change; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the expanded use of bicycles and other alternates to the private automobile will help the county reach its carbon-footprint reduction goals and raise awareness of environmentally friendly transportation practices for the benefit of all. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County designates May 2009 as National Bike Month, which includes May 12-16 as Bike-to-Work Week and May 14 as Bike-to-Work Day. The Board hereby supports the expansion of alternatives to the private automobile and encourages everyone to learn more about the benefits of bicycling in their daily lives. | ||||
