THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

PROCLAMATION DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF MAY 10, 2009 to MAY 16, 2009 AS

POLICE WEEK

AND MAY 15, 2009 AS

PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, May 15th has been National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week containing May 15th has been National Police Week, since President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 on October 1, 1962; and

   

WHEREAS, Peace Officers in San Mateo County safeguard life and property, protect people against violence and provide a vital public service to the community; and

   

WHEREAS, Peace Officers lost in the line of duty throughout the United States have their names inscribed on the National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial, which honors more than 17,500 officers dating back to the first known line of duty death in 1792; and

WHEREAS, Peace Officers in San Mateo County who have laid down their lives for us deserve not only our respect but our heartfelt gratitude and affection.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, proclaims the week of May 10, 2009 to May 16, 2009 as Police Week and May 15, 2009 as Peace Officers Memorial Day to honor the service of San Mateo County’s police officers and to recognize the sacrifice of fallen peace officers.
