Proclamation

THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING MAY 2009 AS

AMERICAN WETLANDS MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, wetlands are one of our last wildernesses which more than one third of Americans use for recreational activities such as fishing, hiking, bird-watching, hunting and wildlife photography; and

   

WHEREAS, wetlands are an important resource where many of the fish people consume must live at some time during their life cycle; and

   

WHEREAS, the economic health of many of our industries, from fisheries to recreation and marine research, depend on wetlands; and

   

WHEREAS, American Wetlands Month celebrates the vital role our wetlands play in our ecological and economic system; and

 

WHEREAS, the observance of American Wetlands Month can do more than any other single event to raise public awareness about the value of wetlands as well as broaden our nation’s understanding and appreciation of our national and local wetlands resources; and

   

WHEREAS, the local community will celebrate American Wetlands Month through the “Keeping Our Baylands Wet and Wild” event on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the Redwood Shores Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates the month of May 2009 as American Wetlands Month and encourages all citizens of San Mateo County to support the efforts to raise awareness of our wetlands.
