RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF ASSEMBLY BILL 1487 (HILL),
INMATE MEDICAL EXPENSES
______________________________________________________________
RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that
WHEREAS, under current law the county sheriff or chief corrections officer is authorized to charge a three-dollar fee to each inmate in county jail who has money in their personal account for inmate-initiated visits; and
WHEREAS, existing law also authorizes the medical provider to waive that fee and requires the fee be waived in life-threatening, emergency situations and for follow-up medical visits; and
WHEREAS, San Mateo County pays for all emergency, mental health and chronic care provided to inmates free or charge and indigent inmates receive free medical care; and
WHEREAS, the inmate-initiated medical visit fee has not been increased since it was established over twelve years ago; and
WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 1487 (Hill) would authorize a county sheriff to increase the fee charged to an inmate-initiated visit from three to six dollars per visit; and
WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 1487 (Hill) would require that the revenue generated from the fee be placed into the inmate welfare fund.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors by the adoption of this resolution hereby supports Assembly Bill 1487 (Hill) regarding inmate medical expenses.
