Proclamation

 

THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING MAY 2009 AS

STROKE AWARENESS MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and is a leading cause of serious long-term disability; and

   

WHEREAS, only a small percentage of stroke patients arrive at the hospital in time to receive treatment that could dramatically reduce a patient’s chance of disability or death because most people don’t know the warning signs or don’t realize they should seek medical help immediately; and

 

WHEREAS, nearly 75% of all strokes occur in people aged 65 years and older; and

   

WHEREAS, common symptoms includes sudden numbness, confusion, difficulty with speaking, trouble walking or loss of balance or coordination and severe headaches; and

   

WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors implemented a stroke center policy directing ambulances to transport acute stroke patients to one of six hospitals serving San Mateo County as primary stroke centers in 2007.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors do hereby proclaim May 2009 as Stroke Awareness Month in order to increase public awareness about the warning signs of stroke and the need to recognize stroke as a medical emergency.
