RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE

Fernekes Family

Upon the Dedication of the

Joseph A. Fernekes Recreation Building

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Joseph A. Fernekes dedicated his entire career to public service, starting as a teacher and school administrator, followed by more than 26 years as a trustee of the South San Francisco Unified School District and as a member of the South San Francisco City Council; and

   

WHEREAS, Joe’s professionalism and leadership skills won the trust and confidence of his colleagues and peers, who thrice selected him as president of the schools district’s board of trustees and four times as mayor of South San Francisco; and

   

WHEREAS, Joe’s tremendous contributions toward improving the quality-of-life in his community covered just about every aspect of local government and non-profit organizations, including business and biotechnology, public education, environmental preservation, affordable housing, modern transportation, water safety, access to childcare and emergency response and preparedness; and

   

WHEREAS, through promoting South San Francisco locally, regionally, nationally and even internationally, Joe’s tireless advocacy for his community earned him the well-deserved title of “Mr. South San Francisco.”

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County recognizes the Fernekes family upon the dedication of the Joseph A. Fernekes Recreation Building in South San Francisco. The Board expresses its gratitude to the family and adds its confidence that Joe’s legacy and spirit will continue in his unmatched work on behalf of the people and businesses of South San Francisco, North County and San Mateo County as a whole.
