WHEREAS, the Sequoia Healthcare District is a valued community asset that supports healthcare initiatives serving the underserved in Redwood City, Atherton, Belmont, Menlo Park, Portola Valley, San Carlos, Woodside and portions of San Mateo and Foster City from Skyline to the Bay, and has been doing so since 1947; and

WHEREAS, since 1996, when the District affiliated with Catholic Healthcare West, it has devoted itself to making sure district infants, children, students, adults and seniors have access to the information, resources and services they need to maintain personal health and wellbeing, thereby helping reduce demand on hospital and emergency room facilities; and

WHEREAS, in furtherance of this goal the district has returned in excess of $20 million in funding — 100 percent of public funds it collects — to more than 100 nonprofit and community health organizations in the area served; and

WHEREAS, the 2009 grant-making cycle occurs at a difficult period in the region and nation, prompting Sequoia Healthcare District directors to recognize the special effort required to maintain healthcare in tough economic times. The district responded by distributing a record $1.44 million to 28 nonprofit community service and healthcare organizations in 2009; and

WHEREAS, the aforementioned nonprofit providers and the Sequoia Healthcare District represent the caring heart of our community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates July 7, 2009 as Caring Community Recognition Day and recognizes the Sequoia Healthcare District and its colleagues and nonprofit providers as a “Caring Community” that serves its constituents with compassion and distinction.
