RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING

 

CITY OF HALF MOON BAY

UPON ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF INCORPORATION

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, the area currently known as the City of Half Moon Bay was founded by the Ohlone Indians and was the first settled community in San Mateo County; and

   

WHEREAS, under Mexican rule, the town was known as San Benito and was part of the land granted by the Mexican government to Candelario Miramontes in 1841 called Rancho Arroyo de los Pilarcitos; and

   

WHEREAS, English speaking settlers began to arrive in the area in the 1850s and renamed the town Spanishtown and many gold rush era settlers came from San Francisco; and

WHEREAS, following the gold rush, Spanishtown and its Half Moon shaped coastline became a vital part of the San Mateo County economy with growth in its agriculture, floriculture, fishing and farming industries; and

WHEREAS, on July 15th, 1959 Spanishtown incorporated as the city of Half Moon Bay following its first city council election on June 23rd, 1959 which led to the election of Nick Carter, a leader in the incorporation process, as Half Moon Bay’s first mayor; and

   

WHEREAS, since incorporating with 2000 residents, the City of Half Moon Bay has grown to 13,000 people and provides not only an economic boost to the County through tourism and agriculture but also provides a part of the identity of the County as a whole.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County does hereby recognize and congratulate the City of Half Moon Bay upon the 50th anniversary of its incorporation.
