RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

DOUG YAMAMOTO

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, DOUG YAMAMOTO is well respected by his colleagues, not only in his union and the building trades, but by all unionists; and

   

WHEREAS, DOUG YAMAMOTO attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy; and

 

WHEREAS, DOUG YAMAMOTO joined the Glazier, Architectural Metal and Glass Workers union Local 718 on October 26, 1976, where he has been an active member for 33 years. He completed the glazier’s apprenticeship program in 1979 and worked as a journeyman and leadman glazier for 23 years; and

   

WHEREAS, DOUG YAMAMOTO was elected Business Representative for District Council 16 and Financial Secretary for Local 718 in 1999, served five years as Financial Secretary and 10 years as Business Representative until his retirement earlier this year. He previously served as a union vice president and president of Local 718; and

   

WHEREAS, DOUG YAMAMOTO has been a strong leader and advocate for Local 718 and District Council 16 members’ involvement in political work and electoral campaigns, and has volunteered for many of the Get Out the Vote efforts of the San Mateo County Central Labor Council, San Francisco Labor Council, and the Building Trades Councils of San Mateo County and San Francisco; and

   

WHEREAS, DOUG YAMAMOTO’s knowledge, leadership, strength, and inspiration have helped shape the labor movement in San Mateo County. He has trained many activists to become leaders, and continues to do so after retirement.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, on August 7, 2009, hereby commends DOUG YAMAMOTO for his lifelong dedication and commitment to working people in San Mateo County, and extends its congratulations to him as an honoree at the 30th Annual C.O.P.E Banquet of the San Mateo County Central Labor Council.
