RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY

CENTER FOR LABOR RESEARCH AND EDUCATION

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, the Center for Labor Research and Education (Labor Center) at the University of California, Berkeley, is a public service program that links academic resources with working people and, since 1964, has produced research, trainings, curricula and other materials that deepen the understanding of employment conditions and develop a diverse, new generation of labor leaders; and

   

WHEREAS, the Labor Center’s leadership schools focus on developing a diverse new generation of leaders to address the critical issues affecting working people in California, and many San Mateo labor union staff and members have attended the Labor Center’s high quality leadership schools and workshops; and

   

WHEREAS, the Labor Center carries out research and provides technical assistance to unions, policy makers and community organizations on a wide range of issues of importance to California’s working families. Current projects include: health care reform, climate change and green jobs, labor law reform, quality jobs and services in the human service industries, and improving the quality of jobs for black workers; and

   

WHEREAS, the Labor Center has provided important research and technical assistance to the San Mateo Labor Council around labor standards at the San Francisco International Airport, and has provided research to the San Mateo County Blue Ribbon Task Force on Adult Health Care Expansion.

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, on August 7, 2009, hereby commends the University of California, Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education for providing vital resources and information to unions and working families in San Mateo County, and extends it congratulations to the Labor Center as an honoree at the 30th Annual C.O.P.E Banquet of the San Mateo Central Labor Council.
