THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

PROCLAMING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER AS

CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, Cancer is the number one cause of death by disease in children, cutting short the lives of more children under the age of 20 than any other disease; and

   

WHEREAS, Childhood cancer has a devastating effect on both the child and the family as they deal with physical and emotional long-range effects from the disease; and

   

WHEREAS, Currently, there are more than 40,000 children who are being treated for childhood cancers; and

   

WHEREAS, One child out of five who is diagnosed with cancer dies; and

WHEREAS, The average age of a child diagnosed with cancer is six years old; saving the life of a child with cancer gives our children a future and San Mateo County honors a child’s determination and bravery to fight the battle against childhood cancer.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, proclaims the month of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, to raise awareness and ensure childhood cancer is a national public policy priority.
